Prime Minister Viktor Orbán congratulated German Chancellor Angela Merkel and citizens of unified Germany on the occasion of their national holiday, German Unity Day in a message, Bertalan Havasi, the Deputy State Secretary heading the Press Office of the Prime Minister informed the Hungarian news agency MTI on Saturday.

“The event of thirty years ago is cause for celebration equally for Germans and for all European citizens, including us Hungarians in particular. When we knocked the first brick out of the Berlin Wall, out of this gap the German people’s desire for freedom conjured a gate leading to German and European unity,” Mr Orbán wrote.

He added that “we Hungarians are also celebrating together with you, we supported the unification of Germany in the widest possible sense thirty years ago also because we knew that without this our own freedom and independence would only remain wishful thinking.”

Mr Orbán warned that these thirty years also conveyed much responsibility as “in our fast-changing world, Europe has an indispensable need for preserving the sensation and joyous experience of our desire for freedom of old and our belonging together. As you could three decades ago also in the future you can count on us in the defence and reinforcement of a united, sovereign, safe and competitive Europe,” the Prime Minister wrote concluding his message to the German Chancellor.
