Hungary-China relations have come a long way

On Monday Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had bilateral talks with Chinese head of state Xi Jinping in Shanghai, Bertalan Havasi, the Deputy State Secretary heading the Press Office of the Prime Minister said.

At their talks held after the opening of the first China International Import Expo (CIIE), the leaders of the two countries spoke about Hungary-China relations – which have intensified in a number of fields in recent years – in terms of praise. Mr Orbán said the development of relations between Hungary and China in the past decade has surpassed all expectations. The Chinese President highlighted that Hungary was among the first to establish diplomatic relations with China, and next year will mark the 70th anniversary of this event. Mr Orbán said Hungary will celebrate this anniversary in a befitting manner; the necessary preparations have already been made.

The Chinese President congratulated Mr Orbán on Hungary’s eminent growth and stability observed in recent years, and at the same time invited the Hungarian Prime Minister to attend next year’s high-level forum of the One Belt, One Road cooperation to be held in Beijing.

Regarding specific economic projects, at the meeting the parties underlined the need for promoting the cause of the Belgrade-Budapest railway line, while the Chinese head of state welcomed the Chinese imports of high-quality Hungarian agricultural products.
