The press chief recalled that already at the international talks held in preparation for the emergency EU summit Mr Orbán asserted that the economic consequences of the sanctions imposed due to the war are grave enough. However, if the sanctions were also extended to oil and gas imports, then these consequences would multiply.
The Prime Minister made it clear that Hungary is unable to follow the example of the United States which has this week imposed sanctions in relation to these products.
“This would represent an unbearable burden for Hungary, and so us joining these sanctions is out of the question, we continue to need the gas and oil that come from Russia,” the Prime Minister said.
Last week, the leaders of several other EU Member States and business interest representations took a similar view opposing the introduction of sanctions in relation to Russian energy sources.
