Bertalan Havasi, Head of the Press Office of the Prime Minister, has informed Hungarian news agency MTI that ahead of the summit of the European People’s Party (EPP) in Maastricht on Thursday Prime Minister Viktor Orbán held talks with President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko.

Mr. Havasi said that the parties agreed that the greatest assistance the European Union could provide to Ukraine would be if the country was granted visa-free travel. Mr. Orbán said that he remains committed to supporting visa-free travel for Ukrainian citizens within EU territory, and this is also the stance he represents in European forums.

In relation to the Ukrainian prime minister’s visit to Hungary scheduled for November, Mr. Havasi added that Viktor Orbán and Petro Poroshenko both agreed that they would like the visit to result in agreeing to a specific economic action plan aimed at boosting bilateral economic relations.

Mr. Havasi added that before the meeting, which was also attended by Antal Rogán (Head of the Cabinet Office of the Prime Minister), the Hungarian prime minister had held talks with EPP President Joseph Daul.

Mr. Orbán is in Maastricht and Brussels on Thursday and Friday, attending an EPP summit and a meeting of the European Council.
