We will not allow Hungarian families to be made to pay the price of the war

The Prime Minister spoke about this in a video statement posted on Facebook after a summit of the prime ministers of the V4 countries and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and bilateral talks between the Hungarian Prime Minister and the British Prime Minister in London.

He highlighted that the topic of the war had swept all other issues off the table. It is clear that we all have a vested interest in this war coming to an end as soon as possible, and through talks, he pointed out, stressing that they will make every effort in the coming weeks for the restoration of peace.

At the talks, the parties also touched upon the effects of the economic sanctions which are taking their toll on everyone in the whole of Europe, and Hungary is no exception.

Mr Orbán stressed that the extension of the sanctions to the energy sector, the oil and gas sectors would represent a disproportionately large burden for Hungary.

He highlighted that he made it clear “while we condemn Russia’s armed attack and we also condemn the war, we will not allow Hungarian families to be made to pay the price of the war”.

These sanctions must not be extended to the areas of oil and gas, he stated.

In Hungary, most of the oil and natural gas come from Russia, and 90 per cent of Hungarian families heat with gas. Without gas and oil the Hungarian economy simply cannott function, the Prime Minister said.
